Daniel McCarthy of East Brunswick previously was charged with robbing a bank and attempting to rob another bank in Toms River on Aug. 22, police said.

On Aug. 18, at approximately 11:05 a.m., the East Brunswick Police Department responded to Columbia Bank (389 Highway 18) for an activated panic alarm. Prior to the arrival of officers, it was reported that a robbery had occurred, and the suspect fled the scene.

The initial investigation revealed a middle-aged white male wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt with the hood up, a medical mask, blue sunglasses, dark sweats, white shoes, holding a black Acme bag with red handles, produced a note demanding money. The suspect left the bank with approximately $150 in cash, ran to a gray Honda Odyssey mini-van parked on West Ferris Street, and fled the area.

A follow-up investigation was conducted by Detective Christopher Williams, along with the assistance of the Toms River Police Department.

McCarthy was located at Motel 6 (244 Highway 18 in East Brunswick) along with his vehicle.

McCarthy was taken into custody without incident and charged by Toms River police with one count of second-degree robbery and one count of second-degree attempted robbery.

McCarthy was subsequently lodged in the Ocean County Jail, where he was also charged with one count of second-degree robbery by East Brunswick police.

The robbery remains under investigation.
